King Edward's School is an independent, co-educational boarding school of 480 pupils aged between eleven and eighteen. Boys and girls enter at eleven, twelve or thirteen years of age. Although the majority are boarders, there are also just over two hundred day pupils from the surrounding towns and villages of Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, who play a full and valuable part in the life of the School community.
The reputation of King Edward's has always been one of high academic standards supported by a strong Christian ethos. The term 'always' is significant as the school was founded in 1553. With such a long history and a commitment to maintain established traditions, King Edward's could be forgiven for being just a little old fashioned but, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The most cursory look at the curriculum and the range of extra curricular activities reveals a school completely in touch with the twenty-first century. For instance, the school was chosen by Microsoft to take part in a pilot scheme for its 'Anytime, Anywhere Learning' programme. The school provides 3rd and 4th formers with laptops inclusive within the fees and this will be extended to the 5th form next year. From September 2004 the school is introducing the International Baccalaureate which will run alongside our A level courses.
The school also runs an annual Autumn Arts Festival - Vivartis - which includes a sculpture trail organised in conjunction with the Surrey Sculpture Society and a number of practical workshops which change from year to year.
Girls and boys from every walk of life integrate successfully and the school has a range of bursaries available to help pupils with a genuine need for a boarding education.
The boys and girls are housed in modern boarding houses, built in the 1970s and recently upgraded. They are designed in pairs so that they share common rooms, house libraries, kitchens and television rooms, whilst still preserving their separate identities. For music and drama competitions, they enter as a paired house of a hundred children, but for sporting competitions, they revert into a boys' or a girls' house as appropriate.
